Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact from Fiction

2022 was a historic year for abortion access in the United States. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court in June 2022, the complexity surrounding the availability (or lack thereof) of abortion access seemed to multiply overnight.

What Did the Supreme Court’s Overruling Mean?

In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade and declared that abortion was a federally protected right. When this was overturned, this meant that abortion was no longer federally protected.

It was then handed to each individual state to determine what abortion access would look like.

How Does the Supreme Court Overruling Impact Women’s Healthcare?

One of the most common myths about the ruling was that women would lose access to lifesaving healthcare. However, this had no impact on policy in regard to pregnancy-related conditions such as care for miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

Some states passed restrictive abortion laws in their state, such as the state of Texas or Louisiana. However, the language of these laws includes health provisions that allow abortion if the pregnancy endangers the woman’s life.

What are the Restrictions on Abortion in Minnesota?

In its state constitution, Minnesota has abortion protected as a constitutional right. Abortion is legal up to viability, with the exception of the woman’s life being endangered.

The state constitution protects abortion, so the only way it would become illegal is if our state constitution was amended.

What is Important to Consider Before an Abortion?

Facing an unplanned pregnancy can cause a range of emotions. Whatever you are feeling is valid, but here at Options for Women St. Croix Valley, we are here to support you, so you don’t have to walk this journey alone.

We recommend scheduling a no-cost pre-abortion screening with an ultrasound. This will confirm how far along you are as well as the viability of the pregnancy. This is important information to monitor since up to 26% of pregnancies end naturally in miscarriage. Miscarriages require a different procedure than an abortion.
